Program Note

In Hong Kong, a city notorious for its exorbitant housing prices, Lai’s lifelong dream is to own an apartment with a view of the sea. She scrimps and saves, doing everything she can to afford a home, but property prices skyrocket, far outpacing her ability to keep up. Just as she is about to secure the apartment of her dreams, the owner abruptly informs her that the deal can no longer proceed. Driven into despair, Lai ultimately takes matters into her own hands to protect her dream. A socially charged slasher that takes direct aim at the realities of Hong Kong, the film boldly channels structural inequalities—where even owning a modest home is nearly impossible for ordinary citizens—through the language of genre cinema. As Lai’s fixation on owning a home spirals into madness, the visceral thrills of blood and violence are matched by the growing weight of a bitter reality. Josie Ho delivers a commanding performance, earning Best Actress at the Festival Internacional de Cinema Fantàstic de Catalunya.
