Program Note

One day, yakuza enforcer Kakihara learns that his boss, Anjo, has vanished without a trace. Driven not by loyalty but by an addiction to the extreme pain Anjo once inflicted on him, Kakihara launches a relentless search. Along the way, he discovers the existence of a mysterious assassin known as Ichi. Timid in everyday life yet deriving a twisted pleasure from killing, Ichi stands in stark contrast to Kakihara, a masochist who craves pain. These two monstrous figures are drawn toward each other as if by fate.
Based on the manga of the same name, the film has earned a fervent global cult following for its boundary-pushing violence and transgressive imagery. Its depictions of brutality, torture, and murder go beyond mere shock, creating a strange, dreamlike atmosphere that unsettles reality itself. In particular, Asano Tadanobu delivers a commanding performance as the extreme masochist Kakihara, leaving an indelible impression, cementing the film’s status as a landmark of cult gore cinema—now presented in a newly remastered 4K version.
