Program Note

If Park Ki-hyung’s Whispering Corridors (1998) revived the cycle of Korean horror cinema, director Ahn Byung-ki helped bring the genre to a wider audience and define its early-2000s form. With Nightmare (2000), The Phone (2002), BUNSHINSABA - Ouija Board (2004), and A.P.T. (2006), Ahn helped shape what would come to be known as K-horror. His debut feature, Nightmare, was particularly startling. Pairing an ensemble of rising young stars with horror, the film follows seven former members of a college club called “A Few Good Men.” As a secret from their past resurfaces, they are killed one by one in brutal circumstances. What really happened between them all those years ago? The closing film of BIFAN 2000, Nightmare, cemented Ha Ji-won’s status as a “horror queen.” Its graphic horror imagery and chilling, shocking finale remain among the enduring images of Korean horror. Now, a newly remastered version by the Korean Film Archive will premiere at this year’s BIFAN, bridging the festival’s past and present.(KIM Hyung-seok)
