After a notorious band of dacoits massacres his family, former police officer Thakur sets out on a path of revenge. He recruits two small-time outlaws he once knew, Jai and Veeru, tasking them with capturing the gang’s ruthless leader, Gabbar. Initially motivated solely by money, the free-spirited pair gradually undergo a change of heart as they bond with the villagers and find love. Witnessing Gabbar’s brutal atrocities firsthand, they awaken to a sense of justice and ultimately take up the fight to protect the village. Since its release in 1975, the film has become a landmark of Indian cinema. Drawing on the aesthetics of the Western, it masterfully blends action, romance, comedy, drama, and musical elements into a quintessential genre spectacle. Despite its runtime of over three hours, its relentless pacing and vividly drawn characters keep audiences fully engaged. Beyond its entertainment value, the film also reflects the social realities of India at the time, adding emotional depth and resonance.
