Program Note

Adapted from Black Cat Mask by Kazuo Umezu, the master of Japanese horror manga, A Remodeled Beauty unleashes a nightmarish world of revenge centered on a grotesque human-feline creature. A family curse, a monstrous birth, the return of a creature, the destruction of a household, and bloody revenge: made more than half a century ago, this B-movie horror deploys the full range of special-effects makeup and visual effects then available in Chungmuro, using distorted camera angles and lenses to intensify its atmosphere of dread. The roughness born of technical limitations becomes a virtue in itself, lending the horror scenes a raw, visceral force. In particular, the relentless climactic sequence in the latter half captures the feverish aura of classic Korean horror at its most intense. This remastered version is missing one of the film’s original eight reels, leaving an approximately eleven-minute gap.(KIM Hyung-seok)
