Program Note

Isabel moves with her two children into a very prestigious building with a peculiar admission process but a very affordable rental fee. Once approved and settled, three elderly neighbors from the lower floor will turn their lives upside down. The latest film from Cristian Bernard, Under Your Feet, is a slow-burning horror-thriller with a stylish presentation that combines haunted-house and modern-witchcraft aesthetics, aided by frightening characters, restless camerawork, and striking mise-en-scène. The frightening performances by Maribel Verdu (she won the best actress award for her role at this year’s Fantasporto,) as the mother struggling against unsettling occurrences and her gradual mental breakdown, along with kids who are helpless not only from the fears of the unknown in the building, but also from witnessing their mother's collapse, help to make Under Your Feet one of the noteworthy horror movies to come out of the Ibero-American region this year.
