Program Note

Director Seo Bo-hyung, whose short Funeral Suit was selected for competition at BIFAN in 2024, also made the short Round Golden Doorknob. The two works have now come together as a single feature, Object and Object. Taking its cue from Freud’s concepts of mourning and melancholia, which describe different responses to a lost object, the film is far more than the sum of two shorts. The two strangely connected pieces are placed in dialogue with each other, exploring, as the English title suggests, an ambiguous desire for an object—or an unknowable obsession with things. In Round Golden Doorknob, a water purifier service technician becomes fixated on turning the doorknobs in his customers’ homes; in Funeral Suit, the protagonist must put on a black suit and attend someone’s funeral. If the former moves with a comic tone, the latter carries an atmosphere of mystery. Together, they probe the inner life of human beings through narratives that feel like urban legends.(KIM Hyung-seok)
