Program Note

An art student Mia must pass her self-portrait project or be kicked out of school. The problem is that she can’t seem to figure out who the hell she really is! She is desperate to break free of her terrible creative block and finds her last hope in a magical ‘Lucid Dreaming Elixir’. The potion sparks her creativity but also unleashes dark monsters from her subconscious. As Mia battles these creatures, her art flourishes! When her estranged mother appears as a hairy monster, Mia must face the truth about her past. Based on a 2020 short film by Deanna Milligan, an actress-turned-director making her feature directorial debut along with Ramsey Fendall, Lucid is a riot-girl tale in the 90s with imaginative visuals and soundtrack that set the film's bold, edgy tone. Caitlin Acken Taylor fully commits to Mia, a punkish girl struggling to express herself through her art. Skillfully shot on celluloid by co-director Mr. Fendall, the film's overall design is every bit D.I.Y. as Mia's artworks. Aided by striking audio-visual style, including psychedelic imagery, Lucid is an impressive first feature to be reckoned with. (Jongsuk Thomas Nam)
