Program Note

Gaku lives in a quiet fishing village with his three daughters, and his greatest anxiety centers on his youngest, Hikari — a girl born invisible. Fearing that her existence might one day be discovered, he has always wished for his family to live quietly and out of sight. After his wife passes away from illness, Gaku becomes even more consumed by a desperate need to protect his daughter's secret. Then one day, news arrives that Hikari's grandmother — a celebrated actress — has been hospitalized. Unable to refuse his daughters' earnest pleas, Gaku finally sets off on a journey to Tokyo with all three sisters in tow. A quietly distinctive film that transforms the ""invisible person"" motif — long consumed as a source of fear in horror cinema — into a warm and heartfelt family drama. Told as an entertaining road movie, it follows a father determined to shield his daughter from the world and children who long to connect with it in their own ways. The journey to Tokyo is punctuated by one mishap after another, yet through it all, the invisible Hikari's presence shines through more vividly than anyone else's. With gentle humor and quiet emotional resonance, the film ultimately delivers a deeply moving reminder that when it comes to connecting with the people we love, being seen or unseen is entirely beside the point.
