Program Note

Kokdu, traditional Korean funerary figurines, were believed to connect this world and the next. In that sense, they are ideal material for what we might call “folk horror.” Kokdu; Spreads its Wings transforms the kokdu through genre, combining occult elements with adventure, thriller, and action. After his father’s strange death, Min-gi comes to learn of an incident from the past and becomes involved in a requiem ritual for an unjust death. What is especially intriguing here is the film’s technical experiment. At moments that demand visual force, the film uses AI-assisted visual effects, which sit surprisingly well with its fantasy tone. A kind of “hybrid AI film” that combines live action with AI-generated images, Kokdu; Spreads its Wings is an experimental work that asks what might be the most fitting way, at this moment, to bring the world of folklore and legend to the screen. In that respect, it marks a step forward from earlier experiments. It is also a work with the potential to develop into a genre franchise built around distinctly Korean material. Director Kwon Hyung-jin returns behind the camera for the first time in nearly a decade since Deep Trap (2015).(KIM Hyung-seok)
