Program Note

A pink-nosed dog named Gohan—the Japanese word for "rice" or "meal"—is discovered abandoned outside a convenience store by a Japanese engineer, who takes him in and cares for him devotedly until his retirement and return home. Following their heartbreaking separation, Gohan is sent to a poorly run shelter with harsh conditions, but with the help of a sympathetic housekeeper working there, he barely manages to escape and begins wandering the world once more, continuing his long journey by forming new bonds with a young, estranged couple. Over the span of more than a decade, this cycle of recurring meetings and farewells deepens the beautiful and profound connection between humans and animals, and while people pass in and out of Gohan's life to live out their own stories, it is Gohan himself who carries every cherished memory forward and grows through them all. Told through the sensitive perspective of a dog, this moving road movie warmly explores the meaning of connection, loss, and the relationships that find their way back to us, presenting a particularly intriguing structure where the story’s three major encounters are directed separately by three different filmmakers who each bring a distinct sensibility and unique vision to the narrative.
