Program Note

In Hightown City, women are disappearing without a trace. Joe, a disillusioned advertising salesman, stumbles upon a trail of disturbing clues during his routine calls. As he becomes more and more obsessed with the case, he finds himself entangled in a web of secrets that forces him to come to terms with the truth, but also with his own involvement. The newest title from a prolific American indie auteur, Mickey Reece (this is his 17th feature in 15 years), Every Heavy Thing is an homage to serial-killer films from the 80s. Still, it reflects the techno-centric contemporary USA, where extremist ideas spread through new media. A faithful homage to Brian De Palma (use of split screens) and to David Lynch's Blue Velvet (a jazz bar performance by Barbara Crampton in a cameo) is evident. Every Heavy Thing is a strange, hallucinogenic, and psychedelic film, but also engaging and entertaining. (Jongsuk Thomas Nam)
