Program Note

While filming a zombie movie at an abandoned amusement park, the cast and crew are suddenly attacked when real zombies appear out of nowhere, yet the director stubbornly refuses to stop rolling; as people fall victim to the undead onslaught one by one, the production hurtles relentlessly toward its namesake finale, the "Blood Moon Ritual," until the ambitious one-take shoot finally wraps with only the leading actress left alive—but rather than the end of the story, this is the exact moment the real story begins. Based on the legendary Japanese low-budget sensation One Cut of the Dead, which generated tremendous buzz when it was invited to the 22nd Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival (BIFAN) before becoming a global box-office phenomenon, this clever narrative has now been remade in Vietnam following an earlier French adaptation. Distinguishing itself from the original, this version offers audiences the distinct pleasure of discovering uniquely Vietnamese cultural elements and localized humor seamlessly woven throughout the plot.
