Program Note

In an era when the influence of the yakuza is steadily fading, the criminal organization to which Kunio belongs is struggling with severe financial difficulties, even resorting to a series of unlikely side businesses to generate income; yet for Kunio, the greatest challenge is keeping his deeply ingrained, rough-edged nature in check. One day, while watching people filming dance videos for TikTok on the street, Kunio acting on impulse vents his pent-up frustration through an impromptu dance performance of his own, and when the video unexpectedly goes viral, he realizes he has stumbled upon a brand-new source of income for the organization and dives headfirst into the world of TikTok. The sheer contrast and unlikely pairing of yakuza culture and social media dance trends provides the film with an abundance of irresistible comic energy, drawing plenty of laughs from the chaos that ensues as a man rooted in a rigid world collides with an entirely different culture, while his gradual transformation through these fresh experiences creates a genuine sense of warmth and empathy. At the same time, the film cleverly incorporates the practical challenges and social prejudices that constantly arise from Kunio’s yakuza identity, adding rich depth and texture to the comedy as it portrays one gangster's desperate struggle to adapt to a changing world, ultimately delivering both infectious humor and an unexpectedly touching emotional payoff.
