Program Note

When Duke goes on a frenzy of reckless deepfake creations, his callous disregard for consequences shows how, with a few clicks on a phone app, anyone can create a deceptive video of an unsuspecting victim and ruin their life… or end it. An A.I. cautionary tale of absurdity that rings true in this age of deepfakes, Appofeniacs is a second feature work by Chris Marrs Pilieros (a prolific music video director for Ariana Grande, The Black Keys, Britney Spears, and more), making a strong statement on the people abusing the A.I. tool, and not the tool itself. Told in four distinct episodes, the characters in each episode are expertly woven into these stories in a Tarantino-esque manner by the director, as if he himself were A.I. trolling these characters (and the actors playing them). A true warning for the future of our generation, Appofeniacs is an attention-grabbing work, boldly told with a touch of black humor by the master manipulator. (Jongsuk Thomas Nam)
