Program Note

Set in Singapore in 1994, a seven-year-old girl starting primary school dreams of a happy family, but her reality is far from the picture she imagines; following her parents' separation, she lives with her father and younger sister at her grandmother's house, constantly walking on eggshells as she navigates the emotional space between a listless, withdrawn father and a mother she can only see on weekends. At school, she secretly sells chewing gum to her classmates in hopes of winning their attention and friendship, while at home she looks after her little sister and carries the heavy weight of problems that belong entirely to the adults around her—making her daily life far more complicated and demanding than it ought to be for a child. Adults often prioritize their own judgments and choices over listening to their children, yet it is always the children who must live closest to and bear those consequences most directly. Based on the director's own childhood experiences, this feature debut traces with exquisite delicacy and deep honesty what children feel and how they grow amid the fractures of family life, treating its young characters not as passive observers but as independent individuals in their own right, with their own rich inner lives and agency. The sight of these children finding their own unique ways to endure, adapt, and grow within a world shaped by imperfect and often irresponsible adults stirs profound empathy and a warm, heartfelt admiration.
