Program Note

A couple’s argument over a coffee table spirals into chaos when a simple mistake turns into a desperate web of lies, panic, depression and the terrifying consequences of trying to cover up the truth. An unsettling remake of Caye Casas' Spanish shock-horror film The Coffee Table, the newer version is aptly directed by Turkish horror maestro Can Evrenol (Baskin fame). Along with larger-scale budget and production design, Mr. Evrenol's adaptation features even gorier and more disturbing sequences for an 'in your face' approach to unsuspecting audiences. As the unthinkable unfolds and spirals into madness, he unleashes his black-comedy touch, turning the film into a devastating nightmare, aided by a fantastic performance by Alper Kul as a grief-stricken and doomed father, Ibrahim. This film is not an easy film to stomach for the audience... and you have been warned. (Jongsuk Thomas Nam)
