Program Note

Alif, a micro art painter, develops partial amnesia following a traffic accident. His wife informs him that his mother will soon be coming to visit — but whether from years spent away from his hometown or from the effects of his memory loss, he can no longer clearly remember even his mother's face. From the moment she arrives, an inexplicable and deepening unease takes hold of him. As his suspicions grow, Alif begins to question whether the woman staying in his home is truly his mother at all — and that doubt gradually leads him toward an unexpected and unsettling truth. A horror thriller that offers a contemporary reimagining of Malin Kundang, one of Indonesia's most beloved folk tales. Where the original legend serves as a moral lesson emphasizing filial piety, the film cleverly subverts its familiar narrative to create something far more layered and complex than a simple struggle between good and evil. The direction places the audience firmly within the protagonist's perspective, inviting viewers to share his doubts and disorientation — maximizing suspense throughout — while the twist that crystallizes as the ending approaches leaves a powerful and lasting impression.
