Program Note

Aza makes his living as a taxi driver, but even getting through each day has become a grueling struggle as he spends much of his life constantly dodging relentless debt collectors. Pushed to the absolute edge of desperation, he enlists the help of a doctor friend to pass his wife, Tancho, off as a terminal cancer patient, launching an online fundraising campaign through social media that explodes into overwhelming public sympathy and waves of support, flooding the couple with more money than they can barely handle. Exploring the terrifying depths to which human greed can extend, this sharp and incisive film beautifully chronicles the process by which a small lie, born out of a desperate need to survive, gradually transforms into an uncontrollable obsession that spirals out of bounds. While audiences may initially feel a sense of relief watching a protagonist trapped on the brink of collapse maneuver his way out of immediate hardship, they are soon forced to confront increasingly conflicted and complicated emotions the moment he begins crossing moral boundaries. At the same time, the film refuses to place all the blame on individual greed alone, instead turning its gaze toward the oppressive social structures and harsh economic realities that push ordinary people into such choices in the first place, culminating in a clever and cutting black comedy that never loses sight of its bitter social conscience and profound insight into reality.
