Program Note

Hana, a lovelorn medical student, becomes terrorized by a sinister force after taking part in an obscure weight loss craze; eating human ashes. Natalie Erika James has directed a haunting folk horror (Relic), a visually stunning prequel to a horror classic (Apartment 7A), and now an impressive body-horror film, Saccharine. The film is also a striking allegory about the torments of modern diet culture, eating disorders, and the rapid weight-loss trend. As Hana (convincingly played by Midori Francis) struggles with self-sacrifice and cultural beauty standards as a person of the Asian diaspora, repeated binge-eating followed by her dependency on the weight-loss drug leads to something truly horrific. Aided by unsettling, gross-out scares, Saccharine will no doubt fulfill the hungers of BIFAN horror aficionados. (Jongsuk Thomas Nam)
