Program Note

Park Kyung-kyun’s Nyepi follows one of horror cinema’s oldest conventions: a group of young people at a resort find themselves caught up in unspeakable terror. Yet its Indonesian setting and the aura of Nyepi Day, the sacred Hindu day of silence, give the film a distinctive tone. As the film opens, a group of young people arrives in Bali. They are there to enjoy their vacation, with little interest in observing the rules of Nyepi Day. Tae-pyung loses his girlfriend Bit-na during a village festival, and as he searches for her, he grows increasingly consumed by fear. Even on a day meant for restraint, people begin to explode with repressed desires and descend into madness. A supernatural horror film thick with superstition and curses, Nyepi remains faithful to familiar genre conventions while forging its own identity through graphic gore and characters that are at once mysterious and eerie. Set against a rarely seen overseas backdrop, it stands out as an unusual entry in the recent Korean horror scene.(KIM Hyung-seok)
