Program Note

In an Indonesia at the height of political turmoil, a brutal series of serial murders breaks out in a remote rural area on the outskirts of East Jakarta, where victims are discovered with large holes pierced through their bodies and mysterious words carved into their faces, prompting Lieutenant Soegeng to be deployed with strict orders to investigate the case and suppress growing whispers of military involvement. However, as the investigation deepens, inexplicable and terrifying events begin to close in around him, dragging him ever closer to a deeply uncomfortable truth that powerful forces have long sought to conceal. Taking the 30 September Movement of 1965—one of the darkest, most traumatic, and controversial chapters in modern Indonesian history that triggered mass killings and profound political upheaval—the film layers this historical backdrop with an enigmatic string of murders, weaving horror, mystery, and detective fiction into a uniquely compelling genre work. Hanung Bramantyo, one of Indonesia's most celebrated contemporary directors, brings an assured command of craft to the material, holding edge-of-your-seat genre tension and the weighty resonance of a national tragedy in precise balance to deliver a haunting, thought-provoking cinematic experience that leaves an impression lingering long after the screen goes dark.
