Program Note

Sora’s life begins to unravel on the very day he receives his university acceptance letter; when his father takes his own life after being crushed by enormous debts from a fraud scheme, Sora abandons his plans for higher education and plunges into high-paying, illicit part-time work, where what starts as simple delivery runs gradually draws him into increasingly dangerous territory until one day, while carrying out an assignment deep in the mountains, he comes face to face with a massive brown bear. While the opening act plays out like a gritty social drama tackling youth crime and economic hardship, the movie shifts gears into an entirely different genre the moment the predator appears, instantly transforming a story of survival within a harsh society into a visceral, relentless survival thriller that races forward with intense momentum. While delivering the raw, primal thrills and tension characteristic of a classic B-movie creature feature, the film displays unexpected sophistication and depth by meticulously paying off the narrative threads and foreshadowing planted early on.
