Program Note

FORTE is a mystery horror film driven by images. Deep in the mountains stands Studio Forte. Yeon-ji begins working there, only to find herself treated less like a musician than as a hired hand in the making of music. The work in this isolated space gradually tightens its grip on her inner world, while a senior composer slowly loses his mind and disappears. Yeon-ji then begins composing music for a film at the request of Director Tak. But she, too, is slowly drawn into madness. What leaves the strongest impression in FORTE is the power of its camera, which captures mysterious and overwhelming landscapes of nature. Surrounded by the mountain’s elemental presences—water, earth, wind, fire, light, and smoke—the film weaves them together with the sound of the piano. The time and space created by this fusion of image and sound converge with the protagonist’s grotesque transformation. The film is directed by Kim Bo-kim, producer of Abroad (Giovanni Fumu), which won the Audience Award and Best Actor Award at BIFAN in 2023. It was invited to the Noves Visions section of the 2025 Sitges Film Festival. (KIM Hyung-Seok)
