Program Note

Obsessed with becoming an influencer so she can keep up with her rich friends, Carla pretends to live in a haunted apartment to gain followers on social media. However, Carla accidentally invokes a real malevolent entity, which quickly takes possession of her life right in front of her viewers, who no longer can tell the difference between what is real and what is fake. Featuring haunting imagery and effective jump scares, Don't Follow Me is an impressive directorial debut by siblings Ximena Garcia and Eduardo Lecuona. This is a found-footage supernatural horror film about an eager social influencer seeking to grow their subscriber base, not far from what real-life streamers actually do. In fact, the film is a metaphor for the terrors of greed in creating, and for the distinction between what's real and what's fake in these frightening times of deepfakes.
