Program Note

At a prestigious private school where everything — from student grades to teacher evaluations — is managed through an advanced technological system, anonymous notices appear across campus one week before final exams, bearing a chilling ultimatum: "If the finals are not cancelled, I will kill myself." The school is thrown into turmoil as an investigation to find the culprit begins, but students and teachers alike are consumed by suspicion and anxiety. Within just a single day of the notices appearing, the school spirals into uncontrollable chaos. The harsh reality of an education system driven by entrance exam competition and grade obsession is by no means unique to Taiwan. Drawing on his own experiences as a student, the director uses the framework of a mystery thriller to deliver a sharp critique of the current education system, while capturing with genuine sincerity the anxiety and emotional wounds of the students struggling to survive within it. Even amid the tension of tracking down the truth, the film never loses its warmth and compassion for the young people at its center. It poses a weighty challenge to a society that demands relentless competition, while holding up a bittersweet mirror to the school days we all share. (Martin LEE)
