Program Note

Juho keeps transferring from one school to another because he cannot stop stealing. At his new school, he meets Dohee, a model student and class president who, surprisingly, shares the same uncontrollable urge to steal. The two come to share each other’s secrets, becoming friends—or perhaps accomplices. Song Hyun-bum’s The Robber is a coming-of-age film built around the act of “stealing.” As suggested by the line, “But do you know why we do this?”, the two protagonists steal other people’s belongings not out of need or practical purpose, but as if to prove their own existence or fill some void within themselves. Each stolen object seems to answer something unspoken inside them. Then, by chance, they find themselves drawn beyond petty theft and into the world of “real crime.” As they make their way through it together, they learn a little more about the world. Will these children stop stealing now? The film applies the crime-thriller genre to a story of teenagers with a light but effective touch, and its well-judged casting is another of its strengths.(KIM Hyung-seok)
