Program Note

The popular horror YouTube channel ‘Killing Time’ is forced to shut down after a fatal accident during a live broadcast. Later, in hopes of making a comeback, the channel’s staff plan even more sensational content, this time set in an abandoned psychiatric hospital deep in the mountains. Can they make it through the broadcast without another disaster? The first feature by director Jang Jun-yeop, Killing Time combines slasher horror with the concept of a YouTube livestream, bringing together the genre’s traditional mechanics and a distinctly contemporary premise. What makes the film especially engaging is the way it keeps the audience in a constant guessing game. It interweaves the events unfolding in reality and the livestream itself, and amid a chain of twists and planted clues, we are asked not only to feel fear but to keep trying to piece things together. The livestream’s carefully staged scenario collides with unforeseen variables, giving rise to sudden ruptures and emergencies. It is a genre-inflected look at an entertainment culture driven by ever more extreme stimulation.(KIM Hyung-seok)
