Program Note

Obsession, Curry Barker's feature film debut, is a tour de force masterpiece, and everything a horror film needs to be... a scary, anguished, and tragic. But the film is so much more than that: it is a scathing allegory on one's toxic possessiveness, unrealistic expectation of 'soulmate,' and the 'nice-guy' delusion. Even though the series of on-screen obsession by attractive Nikki (convincingly played by Inde Navarette in a star-making role) may seem to be the driving evil force in the film, it is the initial obsession by a 'nice guy' Bear (in a breakout performance by Michael Johnston) that is the worst of all, wishing for a black magic to entrap Nikki creating the whole tragic circumstance into involuntary attraction and leading to their violent showdown in the end. Independent horror films have rekindled interest in the genre in recent times; with Obsession, Mr. Barker is carrying the legacy forward for the new generation. (Jongsuk Thomas Nam)
