Program Note

Adrian Chiarella's ambitious feature-directing debut is a film that effectively combines supernatural horror with real-life terrors stemming from homophobia and vigorous religious beliefs in a typical Australian small town. Two teenage schoolboys, Naim and Ryan, played by Joe Bird and Stacy Clausen, are drawn into conflict with the town and its families. Their on-screen chemistry seems genuine, thanks to their star-making performances. It is also horrifying to see the society's gruesome attempts to "normalize" these kids, which are enforced under the premise of love and care, led by Naim's mom, Arlene (played with conviction by Mia Wasikowska). Such abuses lead to the creation of demons unleashing their wrath upon society, leading to a heartbreaking end. Regardless of one's gender identity, Leviticus is a film that all will appreciate.
