Program Note

Yura, a young girl who struggles to fit in with her classmates, discovers an old smartphone while helping clean out a disused school building. Out of curiosity, she and her friends power it on. Soon afterward, strange videos featuring the children themselves begin appearing on their phones. At first, the clips seem like harmless jokes and are consumed much like viral internet memes. What the children do not realize, however, is that these videos are foretelling a horrifying future that awaits them.
A fresh and contemporary horror film that reimagines the spirit of late-1990s J-horror for a new generation. The legacy of classic J-horror, which once transmitted fear through videotapes and mobile phones, evolves here into the age of digital culture through the phenomenon of the “meme.” Yet the film’s greatest strength lies not merely in updating the medium of horror. While intelligently reflecting the realities of the modern era, it further refines the anxiety, tension, and creeping dread that define traditional horror cinema. Like a meme that spreads uncontrollably once unleashed, the terror pursuing the children gradually expands beyond the screen, reaching out to engulf the audience itself. A finely crafted J-horror film for a new generation. (Martin Lee)
