Program Note

Ju Ju, having endured relentless domestic violence, finally flees her home — leaving her young sister behind. She arrives on the streets carrying wounds so deep she can barely speak without stuttering, and soon joins a group of runaway teenagers surviving in Shinjuku. Among these children who have drifted to the streets with their own painful stories, she feels a sense of belonging and stability for the first time. But the dark realities of street life — prostitution, drugs, and violence — refuse to leave them in peace. Centering on the runaway youth gathering around Shinjuku's Kabukichō district — known as the "Toyoko Kids," a social issue that has drawn growing attention in Japan — the film goes far beyond merely depicting juvenile delinquency. Rooted in one of the most urgent social problems of contemporary Japan, it channels its protagonist's emotions and inner world through dreamlike, sensory imagery that draws deep empathy from the audience. Following WE ARE LITTLE ZOMBIES, the director once again unleashes his singular creative vision in full force, while Mori Nana anchors the film with a raw, viscerally alive performance that feels as though she stepped straight off the streets. The film's compassionate gaze toward these wounded, drifting children — who ultimately become each other's light — lingers long after the credits roll.
