Program Note

Misora possesses a special ability: she can hear the voices of the dead. One day at a funeral home, she strikes up a conversation with a pregnant woman — only to realize that the woman is the very person being mourned. Funeral director Urushibara, who notices Misora's gift, invites her to work alongside him, and so she begins a unique journey of seeing people off — bridging the hearts of those who have departed with those who remain. Based on the widely acclaimed novel of the same name, the film translates the warmth and consolation of its source material onto the screen with remarkable delicacy. Set against the backdrop of a funeral home where life meets its final moment, it weaves together a tapestry of farewell stories, inviting us to see death not only as sorrow, but as an extension of love and memory. The process of conveying a departed soul's last wishes and gently tending to the pain of those left behind is especially moving. Director Miki Takahiro, beloved for his sensitive and emotionally attuned filmmaking, brings his characteristic warmth to the material, and the heartfelt performances of Hamabe Minami and Meguro Ren complete a beautiful work that will linger long in the heart.
