Program Note

After giving birth to her daughter in prison, Hui-zhen raises the child with the support of her fellow inmates. But as the girl grows, continuing to care for her behind bars becomes increasingly difficult, and even when the prison authorities urge her to consider adoption, she cannot bring herself to decide. Then one day, she learns that her daughter may lose her sight due to congenital cataracts. Torn between her daughter's future and the harsh reality before her, she resolves to form a choir with her fellow inmates — to give her child one last unforgettable memory. A Taiwanese reimagining of the Korean film Harmony, the film is helmed by a director well-versed in adapting Korean cinema, who delicately localized the emotional core of the original to win the overwhelming affection of Taiwanese audiences — driving the film to the number one spot on Taiwan's all-time box office. The friendship and solidarity forged among inmates with vastly different stories resonate deeply, and the songs they sing together make the emotion all the richer. Above all, Ivy Chen's deeply authentic performance convincingly captures a mother's love and sacrifice, firmly anchoring the film's emotional weight throughout.
