Program Note

After their mother dies working at a wig factory, eldest daughter Putri takes a job at the same factory to pay off the debt she left behind. Putri accepts her mother's death as a suicide, but younger sister Ida believes their mother was possessed and killed by a malevolent entity born from the factory's exploitation of its workers. Determined to uncover the truth, Ida plunges into the factory — joined by their younger brother Bona, who possesses a unique ability to heal his own wounds. Carrying their own individual scars, the three siblings are drawn deep into the factory, where a dark secret lies buried. As its title suggests, the reality of labor exploitation so severe it robs workers of sleep is not a problem confined to any one country. Indonesia's celebrated director Edwin channels this universal social issue through the grammar of horror, infusing it with his signature sense of humor to deliver a refreshingly original genre experience. Eerie dread and inventive comedy coexist in uncanny harmony, as the film naturally casts its shadow over the lived realities of labor exploitation and inequality. Balancing genre thrills with sharp social consciousness, this work stands as further proof of the formidable power of Indonesian horror, which has been drawing growing attention from the global film community.
