Program Note

A horrific indiscriminate massacre erupts in broad daylight at a family restaurant and shopping arcade. The police identify a middle-aged man at the scene as the prime suspect — but the CCTV footage only deepens the mystery. People collapse around him in pools of blood, yet no weapon is ever seen in his hands. As investigators trace his movements, they learn his name is Yamada Taro, and the further they follow his trail, the more clearly the tragic arc of his life comes into focus. An inexplicable ability may be a blessing to some, but to others it becomes an unbearable curse. The film delicately yet tragically portrays how a person endowed with a special power becomes isolated and gradually broken by society and those around him. The despair of a man who wishes to erase his very existence resonates far beyond its genre premise, leaving a deep emotional impact. Sato Jiro, who recently delivered a standout performance in Bakudan, serves as story writer, screenwriter, and lead actor — conveying on screen the solitude of a man pushed to the margins of the world, while leaving a lasting impression off screen as a creator of remarkable range.
