Program Note

A group of college friends visits a cemetery said to be home to a cursed tree, hoping to test their nerves. But the following day, one of the group has vanished — and inexplicable, unsettling events begin to close in on those left behind. To uncover the truth behind the disappearance, the testimonies of everyone who was at the cemetery that night are gathered one by one, and from the tangle of conflicting memories and confessions, a horrifying truth emerges that no one could have anticipated. The pairing of horror maestro Shimizu Takashi with Sesuji — who has risen to prominence as one of Japan’s leading voices in horror literature through works such as About a Place in the Kinki Region — is, in itself, enough to set expectations high. The film introduces a new mode of horror built around a unique format called the “anketo,” in which fear expands with each testimony layered upon the last. A particularly striking circular narrative structure and a meticulously engineered story draw the audience naturally deeper into the labyrinth, while the two central motifs — “the mouth” and the “anketo” — are deployed with intelligence and precision, pushing the film beyond simple fright into a realm of horror that invites interpretation and ignites the imagination. A work that distills the full pleasures of the genre while showcasing genuine narrative craft, it stands as horror at its most compelling. (Martin LEE)
