Program Note

A rural village in northern Malaysia, near the Thai border, in the late 1990s. Hong Im, a widow, spends her days farming and her nights performing healing rituals for the ailments and misfortunes of those around her. Still bearing the wounds of the colonial era, this place is perpetually unsettled by conflicts over land ownership. Then, one by one, inexplicable and uncanny events begin to occur around Hong Im, forcing her into a desperate struggle to protect herself and her children. Set against the backdrop of modern Malaysian history, where the regional and class tensions born of colonial rule remain deeply entangled, the film is a dreamlike drama in which reality and fantasy flow naturally into one another. The director weaves together memories of her own childhood with the scars of history, crafting a narrative that is both weighty and luminous. Fan Bingbing appears in a striking new guise, delivering a performance of considerable depth. Her presence, rendered with rare sensitivity to both suffering and resilience, enriches the emotional texture of the film, transforming the grief and wounds harbored within Malaysian society into something achingly beautiful.
