Program Note

The crew of Ghost Hunter, a popular Indonesian horror streaming channel, sets out to hit 3 million views with a live broadcast from an abandoned hospital in Korea, notorious as one of the country's most haunted locations. Seven young men and women enter the hospital—a legendary mecca for horror enthusiasts—and as the livestream begins, the viewer count starts to soar. But as they draw closer to their goal, an ominous force lurking within the hospital begins to reveal itself, and the broadcast spirals into an unimaginable nightmare. This reimagining of Jeong Beom-sik’s GONJIAM: Haunted Asylum reinterprets the original through an Indonesian sensibility. While preserving the film’s core premise and mounting tension, it incorporates today’s streaming culture and content-driven landscape, resulting in a distinctly contemporary take on the material. In particular, the premise of Indonesian streamers confronting terror inside a Korean abandoned hospital introduces a compelling cross-cultural dimension absent from the original. At a time when Southeast Asian remakes of Korean films are attracting increasing attention, this production infuses the story with the atmosphere and sensibilities unique to Indonesian horror, creating an experience that feels both familiar and refreshingly new.
