Program Note

Home A Loan fuses the apartment—the grand narrative of desire in Korean society—with the horror genre. In this decrepit apartment complex, Eun-jin’s family dreams of redevelopment. Doors barely close, strangers wander through the ruins of the estate, yet the family endures it all for the promise of tomorrow’s happiness. As Eun-jin begins to suffer from strange visions, her family is drawn ever deeper into danger.
By taking on the real estate problem as one of the structural contradictions of Korean capitalism and by working through the conventions of genre cinema, Home A Loan can be called a distinctly Korean house-horror film. The home here is not a place of life, but a haunted site possessed by fetishistic desire. Director Kim Tae-kyung, who has worked consistently in horror since Dead Friend (2004), creates shocking images within the film’s everyday spaces, and their impact is heightened by Yu-seon’s resolute yet chilling performance in the lead role.
