Program Note

In an Indonesian prison where corrupt elites and violent offenders are housed side by side, violence and unrest are part of everyday life. One day, the arrival of a new inmate begins to alter the atmosphere within the prison walls. Soon, prisoners start turning up dead, their bodies grotesquely arranged and displayed like works of art. Cut off from the outside world, the inmates find themselves trapped in a desperate struggle for survival. In his latest work, genre master Joko Anwar brings together many of the elements that have defined his career. While centering on brutal murders and nerve-racking suspense, he skillfully incorporates black comedy, social satire, and mystery through a cast of vividly drawn characters. The prison's claustrophobic yet fascinating setting generates relentless tension, while the raw display of desire and power within its walls becomes a sharp reflection of the realities beyond them. Balancing visceral genre thrills with incisive social commentary, the film once again demonstrates why Joko Anwar remains one of the most compelling genre filmmakers working today. A relentless exercise in fear, tension, and catharsis, it is an experience that demands to be seen on the big screen. (Martin LEE)
