Program Note
100 Liters of Gold is a comedy of drunkenness and a farce of hangovers. Middle - aged sisters Taina and Pirkko, who live in a small village in southern Finland, are brewers of sahti, a traditional Finnish beer. Tasked with preparing 100 litres of sahti for the wedding of their younger sister Paivi, who has returned to their hometown, they accidentally end up drinking all the beer themselves. With only 48 hours left until the wedding, they must somehow brew the promised beer again.
Teemu Nikki, known for The Blind Man Who Did Not Want to See Titanic (2021) and Nimby – Not in My Backyard (2020), returns with a foolish and hilariously chaotic family comedy rooted in Finland’s unique culture and sensibility - filled with drinking, arguing, and mishaps. Yet beneath the joyful surface lies the emotional scars and trauma of its characters. This charming film gently reveals one of life’s quiet truths: that the comedic misadventures of its protagonists mirror the sadness of unlucky people who keep making the same mistakes, without ever needing to boast about its insight.
