Program Note

An inspiring film that shows us “the huge potential” of a master who would later lead Japanese science fiction. Inspired by Star Wars a year earlier, the director, along with fellow members of the “Fantastic Film Kids” in Seikei Senior High School Film Research Society, who were getting noticed for their various genre endeavors, created a short film that could be considered a science fiction blockbuster of the time. The witty “handmade” special effects, using the characteristics of 8mm film, are also a highlight. (HONG Sanghyun)

Director

KONAKA Kazuya

Born in 1963, he began his career making 8mm films and earned award from few film festivals, including Turn Point 10:40 (1979), since he was junior in high school. He later expanded his career to 16mm feature films and established Bear Brothers in 1993 with his brother Chiaki, known as a writer of Ultraman series. His broad body of work spans across films, TV dramas and documentaries including his notable work on the Ultraman series in 1997.
