Ayano just graduated from high school, Miho is going through a patch of no sex with her husband, and Ayako – who was an AV actress – is living with her mother. The Lowlife is the story of three Japanese women in the ‘glamorous’ world of adult film.

Program Note

This film is based on the first novel written by Sakura Mana, who is an AV actress, essayist and novelist. In this film, there are three characters. Miho is in her thirties. She takes on a career In AV impulsively after her relationship with her husband degenerates. Ayano is an AV actress. Her mother visits Ayano from Hokkaido when she finds out about her daughter’s job. Ayako is a high school student. It is known to her school that her mother in an AV actress. The three women are tangled with AV and have to show others their most intimate and private selves. Who are they and what are they thinking? Zeze Takahisa debuted in the pink film genre, he was once called the Pink 4th King. He portrays the three women’s anxieties, choices, and routines in this film in a sophisticated way. The director is able to visualize the original novel and create something that anyone could sympathize with. Sex is necessary to both genders and important but sometimes it is meaningless. Ayano’s mother says that Ayano always can come back. Ayano replies, “how can I go back?” Then her mother hugs Ayano ever gently and silently. Daily life is always beyond our senses. The Lowlife even draws the weight of the living, the delicacy of the shaking desire and emotions. This is the masterpiece of the erotic drama, created by the great master of Pink film, Zeze Takahisa.
