Deep in the forests of the Pacific Northwest, Ben lives in his own world bringing up 6 kids on his own. However, he’s under constant pressure to come back to city life and leave the freedom in the wild behind. Eventually, Ben and children do come out of the woods and head back to civilization. This coming-of-age tale romps joyfully between the rigors of living life like most people, and the loneliness of breaking away from the norm.
Captain Fantastic, the second film from director and former actor Matt Ross, is gratifying from start to finish, with comedy that continues restlessly and finally delivers a moment of touching reconciliation and clemency. This film explores a route to overcoming differences of generation, ideology and class, ultimately restoring the warmth of human will; a useful and sweet stimulus to behold.
The acting ensemble of Viggo Mortensen and the various youthful performers is quite brilliant and the emergence of genuine 'Fantastic’ family is certainly something to covet. This bright film which could be described as perhaps Running on Empty made with the sensibility from Little Miss Sunshine; and it won the Best Director prize the Un Certain Regard award at Cannes Film Festival.
