¡á Jury's Review
The 19th NAFF Project Market received a total of 259 project submissions. The range of genres was broad — science fiction and horror, occult and noir, folk fantasy and social thrillers, fantasy with documentary sensibilities, and animation all gathered in one place. Choosing among them was extraordinarily difficult. We also had to weigh considerations of country, genre, subject, and theme, which made striking a balance an even more demanding task. Across the list of submissions, we saw, here and there, the names of filmmakers nurtured by the Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival. That was a great pleasure. To see established and emerging directors competing at the same table was beautiful beyond measure. Time and budget constraints prevented us from advancing more projects to the final round — a regret we still carry.
Once AI was deployed in war, we could no longer return to what came before. Perhaps, as in The Terminator, an age will come in which humans confront AI robots. What humans can do in the face of that, I believe, is to keep doubting and asking.
With deepest respect for the courage and imagination of every applicant, I hope to see all of these works on screen before long. There is no hierarchy between the selected projects and those that were not. For you, who keep doubting and asking, are always right.
