2025 NAFF Project Market Selections Announcement
29th Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival (BIFAN, Festival Director: SHIN Chul) has announced the official selections for this year’s NAFF (Network of Asian Fantastic Films) Project Market, part of its industry program. A total of 29 projects from 13 countries have been selected.
The lineup includes 14 titles for the ‘It Project’, 5 for ‘Project Spotlight Korea’, 4 for ‘Work in Progress’, 1 for ‘Blood Window’, 1 for ‘Sitges FanPitch’, 1 for ‘Cannes Fantastic 7’ and 1 for ‘Nordic Genre Invasion’.
This year’s NAFF Project Market received 232 submissions from 39 countries worldwide. The preliminary jury included key industry figures such as Paul D. KIM, CEO of Hive Filmworks Inc., and CHO Yoonjung, CEO of BLUEMOONPARK Co., Ltd, alongside BIFAN programmers Jongsuk Thomas NAM, Martin LEE, Jin PARK, and Samantha MOON, Industry Program Manager.
This year’s NAFF placed a strong emphasis on diversifying its lineup. Projects include Unhearable by Stanley WONG, a 2024 Fantastic Film School alumnus, and Pontianaks in Taiwan by GOH Ming Siu, who participated in the 2020 program. Also featured is Inheritance by Joel SOH, a filmmaker known for his impact on Malaysia’s film industry, and the Korean omnibus series Under by SON Ho-seung, an 8-part exploration of society’s dark corners and human depth.
Particularly noteworthy this year are projects based on original IP adaptations. These include Lovely Ugly Your Friend, adapted from the novel by Japanese author Sawamura Ichi; A Twist(s) Tales, a modern take on Vietnamese folklore; and Bloodstained Painting, based on a novel by renowned Indonesian horror writer Abdullah Harahap. These films reinterpret their source material through a contemporary lens while preserving the literary depth of the originals, and are expected to offer fresh experiences for global audiences.
NAFF has continuously collaborated with festivals, platforms, and institutions to discover outstanding genre projects and expand the foundation for genre filmmaking. Also the program has worked with long-time partners like DHL, the Seoul Business Agency, Japan’s VIPO, the Taipei Film Commission, Singapore’s Mocha Chai Laboratories, and Thailand’s Kantana Post Production. This year, Malaysia’s Abonormal Studio joins as a new partner, further expanding NAFF’s global network.
In 2024, NAFF reinstated its ‘Work in Progress’ section, previously active until 2022, to provide tangible support not only for development-stage projects but also those in post-production. Additionally, the ‘Project Spotlight’ section—which highlights the genre cinema of a selected Asian country—has chosen Korea as this year’s featured nation, focusing on the discovery of emerging Korean film projects.
Programmer Jongsuk Thomas NAM commented, “This year’s submissions showcased a wide range of ideas—from thrilling sci-fi and chilling horror to thought-provoking mystery thrillers from around the globe. After much deliberation, we selected projects that represent the current state of genre cinema worldwide. We look forward to seeing these films completed and, hopefully, featured at future editions of BIFAN.
