Synopsis
Phantom of the Opera is based on the original Gaston LEROUX's novel. Since the novel is so popular, the storyline is nothing new. However, as characteristics of the movie change depending on the director, it evokes curiosity about Dario ARGENTO's version. After the release of the film, everyone was surprised by its style. It was completely out of expectation. This film is considered as the most unique and distinguised one in ARGENTO's filmography.
Phantom of the Opera deserves to be called a film by the ARGENTOs. His brother Claudio ARGENTO is the producer and his second daughter Asia ARGENTO plays the title role. It was the second time she'd taken the leading role after The Stendhal Syndrome . However, this film does not show the aesthetics of murder peculiar to ARGENTO. Although the elements of the horror film remain in this movie, it seems that the director tried to turn the film into a beautiful love story. Magnificent murder scenes are not found in this film. Instead, it strongly focuses on the interior of the opera house which allows us to appreciate the aesthetics of dark place. In other words, this film is completely different from his other films in terms of the style and colors. That is why this movie is meaningful. Asia ARGENTO, an actress of distinct personal character, plays Christine, who learns how to sing from the Phantom. Julian Sands, who appeared in Naked Lunch, Boxing Helena and Warlock, plays the role of Phantom without wearing any mask. (KIM Jong Chul)
