Synopsis

“Ars Moriendi” is a book about the art of dying. At a time when the pest was so rampant that it was impossible for clergymen to assist every dying person in Medieval Europe, this book provided practical guidance for the dying to die well without the presence of clergymen. The art of dying was like something that determined the salvation of the dying. keeps tracks of dying as a kind of salvation, for which some people desperately crave. Simon Grombeck suffers from a deep wound caused by his mother's suicide. He is homosexual and has a boyfriend, but he suffers from homophobia since he believes that she committed suicide because of his homosexual tendency. He abhors his genitals. He encounters Oliver Hagen, who also lives under the shadow of his mother. In order to escape from his mother who has governed his life for so long, he creates another self, who craves for cannibalism. As the two men meet each other, the movie shows terribly beautiful cannibalism. Grimm Love  is based on a real story of Armin Meiwes, who is known as a guy eating human flesh in Rohtenburg. Unlike other thrillers, it focuses on the question, ‘What makes people want to die?’ as well as the usual question, ‘What makes people want to kill?‘ In addition, along with the shocking theme, the impressive images and outstanding direction make this film even more special. However, it is pitiful that this film is not free from the hackneyed question, ’Is it ultimately mother that governs the subconscious?’ (SOHN Hee Jeong)
