Synopsis

People cry, calling their dogs name. You guessed wrong if you think its the story of Nero's trusty companion Patraschu. If you were expecting an edifying fairy tale for grownups, you're wrong again. If you picture a moving romance of BAE Doo-Na and LEE Sung-Jae. Thats not even close. So, what in the world this movie is about? you might ask. A Higher Animal tries to deal with numerous misunderstandings that are scattered throughout our everyday lives, things that are totally unexpected. Yoon-Ju (LEE Sung-Jae), who relies on his wife for support, wants to be a professor, but cant because he doesn't have enough bribe money. He locks up a mute puppy named Pindory(Shitzou) in a boiler room, thinking its an old neighbor lady's beloved noisy Chiwawa. Hyun-Nam, who works at the apartment administration office, thinks that CHOI, a homeless man, is a dog thief and reports him to the police. Yoon-Ju feels its extravagant when his wife buys a poodle named Soon-ja with her retirement pay. Hyun-Nam looks for Yoon-Ju's missing dog everywhere, not realizing that he has to find it for his wife, which will eventually give him the opportunity to become a professor. These misunderstandings lead to Yoon-Ju and Hyun-Nam's night race. Despite Yoon-Ju's efforts to show Hyun-Nam that he's the one who threw the dog from the roof (thinking shell realize this when she sees him run), all Hyun-Nam realizes is that he's missing a shoe. Do you find Yoon-ju and Hyun-nams race funny? If so, you might be a little cold-blooded. You might be cold-blooded if you could really laugh at these petty bourgeois, such as BAE Doo-Na, who you might possibly meet at the administration office of your apartment. Or LEE Sung-Jae, who might be separating his garbage at the recycling bin. Or the brave foul-mouthed dog thief janitor BYUN Hee-Bong. Or the neighbor lady whose only property she leaves on her death is dried radishes. The director is saying that the world is generous to false testimony but not to true confessions. But his words that describe this dark world thats filled with concealed, fake and distorted truth, are so hilarious and brilliant, such as the way the 100m long toilet paper roll thrown by Yoon-Ju runs on the road. Should we still stick to our sucking lives that have become incoherent from concealing, faking, distorting, false accusations and misunderstandings? Edward Wood would answer. Sure, you never know. The rain could stop when we turn around corner. Lets go.(PARK Sung-Kyung)
